Imagine a roller disco at night, hot pants optional. People whiz by in slow motion, flying past clouds of soft light dappled with glitter. The strobe light switches on and everything returns to normal speed. This is the sound that FUR’s Witches makes. It’s that disorienting, repetitive, and sometimes motion-sickening kind of sound. You can almost see flashes of soft smiles and sweaty palms in between the light and dark.
FUR, the music project of Bryce Isbell, is on a new offshoot label of Lefse records, Waaga (Neon Indian). Witches will be his third release. Witches submerges you in its environment right off. You’re standing on tiptoes reaching for fresh air under the atmospheric, perfumed beats. The first half of the album has a thick and foggy sound. The track “Haunted” personifies this. Its siren filled loops start off hazy and get clearer and clearer, inviting more synth to join in. The second half of the album is heavier with more bass, which is near absent on most tracks. The tracks “Hidden” and “Tunnel” beg to be remixed in hot spring dance jams. They mesh the atmosphere of the first half with more approachable dance beats.
It’s a Real Estate for the winter months. You breathe in the sound and can feel the cool filling up your lungs. Well, unless you’re a smoker or something...
The album won't be released until February 23rd, but you can pre-order it here.Track Listing:
