The Dodos at the First Unitarian
The Ruby
Suns and The Dodos played an exhilarating set at the First Unitarian Church on
Monday night.
Openers The Ruby Suns played upbeat, Panda Bear-esque layered tracks that were fused
with a lot of native New Zealand elements, including a song in Māori, the
native language of New Zealand. They quickly became darlings of the crowd by mentioning
the Phillies game and throwing in some score updates. (The band members’ New Zealand
accents also inspired a lot of Flight of the Conchords jokes from the crowd.) Though
I was a little frustrated by the pre-recorded elements of The Ruby Suns, they
had some really great percussion and were an energizing experience.
The Dodos certainly lived up to their “great live band” reputation. The Dodos rocked out throughout the entire set and played a fair share of the liveliest tracks from both Time to Die and Visiter. What The Dodos' lyrics lack in poetic quality was made up for by the ornate composition of the instrumental aspects of each song. Meric Long and Keaton Snyder opened the track “Fools” by playing the vibraphone with bows, which was incredible to watch and created a beautiful sound. The consistent energy carried by the band was contagious, especially on tracks like “Red and Purple” and “Paint the Rust”. The Dodos are simply a band not to miss.
