There is never a shortage of shows in Philadelphia, and it makes it hard then, to choose between all of the great ones when they just so happen to fall upon one night. On Saturday, October 17th, 2009 Girl About Town's head spins whilst we choose between venues for the many live gigs happening this weekend. Sweden's award winning artist, Anna Ternheim will be opening for our favorites; Asobi Seksu and Loney, Dear at Johnny Brenda's. Anna, who is used to sell-out crowds in Sweden will be playing to a more intimate audience at JB's for the tour of her new album Leaving On Mayday (recorded with help from Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn & John), so we're looking forward to seeing her live.

Also, fans of L.A.'s Sea Wolf will be happy to see them gracing Philadelphia again on Saturday night, at The North Star. The group, who take their name by the book of the same name by novelist Jack London, are playing dates across the US with support from newcomer Sara Lov. Lov, who released her August 2009 debut LP, 'Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming' has of late been a graceful feature in the news with an article featuring her life triumphs as a child who survived a kidnapping (LA Weekly - http://www.laweekly.com/2009-09-10/music/seasoned-eyes). Her setup is described as a performer, "armed with just her voice, a guitar, and a vintage vinyl record player handling the backing tracks.". San Francisco's Port O'Brien opens.

We just received new-ish local group Eat Your Birthday Cake's debut EP (which we will review post haste), and besides the great cover art by local artist Matt Silverman; they are a group who are getting some well-received rave reviews from our friends in the music community. They've played World Cafe, The M Room, and The North Star, and their live show is filled with stage banter and hi-jinks are befitting of a band named "Eat Your Birthday Cake". "A healthy dose of humor, irony, and honesty pervade their infectious
melodies, many of which can be heard on their inaugural EP release, "I
Know You Can"." The trio's drummer Bobby was clocked at a local bookshop and we had to ask him why we should be heading out to see their band, who incidentally are our third pick, and play JD McGillicuddy's on Saturday as well (no cover!), "Support the arts, have a good time, and if they wanna listen to songs about girls, guitars and bikes, and songs about Grandmas--well, if they like listening to songs about girls, bikes and Grandmas...if people are looking for a good time; this should be reason enough!" The group are supporting Brooklyn group Tall Tall Trees, and Acres of Diamonds. Cailin Callahan opens for this Bag of Songs blog presented evening.
