Philadelphia local Brown Recluse has released a 12" record of new songs through their label Slumberland Records, this month. This EP news rides on the coattails of the announcement that their release of a debut full-length album through Slumberland will be released soon after (scheduled for late 2009) as well. The songs from their newly released EP, The Soft Skin, were all recorded in 2007, but due to delays in lineup changes (among other things, such as a shortened name change) the EP hadn't been released until this month. It includes four tracks, that range from the lush orchestration of opener "Rotten Tangerines", sided with horn-laden crowd favorite "Night Train", and is backed by slow-starter "Rainy Saturday", to the finale of the jangle-and-jump of BR's final track, "Contour and Context". What isn't surprising are the comparisons: The Zombies, Margot Guryan and Belle & Sebastian (to name a few), but in the same breath; this is a band that clearly knows the sound that it loves, and goes after it with enthusiasm and heart. There's a warm feeling that comes from these songs; enough to perk up a rainy day, or to push away the clouds.
