The Rosebuds merge on Philly
The Rosebuds are married couple Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard from the music-rich scene of Raleigh, North Carolina. Originally meeting in Wilmington, NC, the couple moved to Raleigh and had their hopes set on Merge Records, the premier Chapel Hill based indie label that believes in talent over hype. Within a year of settling in Raleigh and sending the label their demo, The Rosebuds had their first album released in 2003. Since then, it's been a great ride for the couple, who released three more albums including their most recent work "Life Like" which debuted this past October (still on Merge). The latest album is a sonically lighter, more acoustic and jangly affair, compared to their previous album of dark synth pop numbers, and this in theory is what defines the Rosebuds, i.e. they jump from genre and their inspiration of the moment to defy definition. They had some friends contribute work to the new album, including Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Portastatic's Matthew McCaughan, which may explain the more poetic sentiment found on the album, although we suspect it's more a return to the bands early work. Besides the recording and subsequent tour in support of the new album, the band recently contributed a cover of "The Walk" to American Laundromat's release of "Just Like Heaven", a tribute album based on The Cure that will be available on January 27th. They also covered The Pixies for a similar tribute album, also released by American Laundromat last year.
The Rosebuds bring their show to Philly on January 15th at Johnny Brenda's with Raleigh NC's The Love Language and Philly's own National Eye as support.
