Don't miss Ottawa, Ontario's The Acorn tonight, November 14th at The Theatre of Living Arts here in Philadelphia when they open for the legendary southwestern rock group Calexico (see also: Giant Sand) who are currently on tour (having recently played sell-out dates throughout Europe) for their 2008 album release, Carried to Dust. The Acorn, who recently came off of UK dates themselves supporting Akron/Family, have been gaining more and more notoriety since the release of their critically-lauded Blankets EP and will be performing tracks from their most recent release: an album called Glory Hope Mountain ("Klausener sings in in a voice that's equal parts Sufjan Stevens and Paul Buchanan...powerfully poetic and mercifully unsentinmental..." - Uncut, 4 Stars), which highlights lead singer and instrumentalist Rolf Klausener's own mother's story of how she came to emigrate to Montreal, Quebec from Honduras. "Part biographical narrative, part surreal fairy tale, Glory Hope Mountain is the story of Gloria Esperanza Montoya. Based on interviews recorded in early 2006 by her son, Acorn songwriter Rolf Klausener, the album is a sonic retelling of the stories from her early life in Honduras to her eventual immigration to Montreal in 1972." The rainy and downcast weather of late is the perfect excuse to take in the warm sounds and impressive material these acts will be performing at tonight's TLA show; music played with a personalized enthusiasm contrasted by original compositions and storytelling, easily transporting the listener right into the engaging world of the songwriter.
