Nothing Is Precious Enough For Us, the sweet and tuneful new release by Sub Pop's Death Vessel (a project curated by primary member Joel Thibodeau), is a plucky album featuring off-the-beaten path melodies and quirky pop-folk arrangements. As soon as the opening track "Block My Eye" begins, Joel Thibodeau's ethereal and uncharacteristically high vocals come to light, ringing out with each delicate, finger-picked note. Thibodeau's deep tones settle into such a dream-like quality that it easily compliments the charming and original arrangements (using instruments ranging from lap steel, pump organ, minstrel banjo, glockenspiel to toy piano and more--Clem Snide would feel right at home here). Album tracks range from indie-pop (Bruno's Torso), all the way to heavy folk (Peninsula), and americana (Obadiah In Oblivion). For fans of The Shins or Postal Service's first releases, this one belongs right up there in your collection. Collaborating musicians for this album turned into a local affair, with The Figgs' talented producer and session musician Pete Donnelly contributing to the album's arrangements and playing on tracks at Undercarriage Recording here in Philadelphia.
