The debut full-length Oracular Spectacular by Brooklyn-based duo MGMT (Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden--formerly named: The Management) bubbles up from the surface of the album's first track "Time to Pretend", a slow start in some of their most blistering psychedelia (see also: "4th Dimensional Transition", "Pieces of What", and "Future Reflections") that only climax as tracks progress. The album breaks out with some of its biggest hooks and flourishes early on for songs "Weekend Wars", "Electric Feel", and "The Kids", making the 'floorshakers' apparent from the start. The band's solid sound shows roots ranging from the simple trajectories of influences hanging on Bowie, T-Rex, Beck, Flaming Lips and possibly even early-Ween at any given moment which give their songs a wide-open breadth and appeal that easily dips into electronica, psych, and dance without batting an eyelash. The early-70s influence is especially apparent on a song destined to become one of this summer's highlights; the album's fatally-addictive track "Electric Feel", which is a destined-classic right down to its cheeky and hot, dance floor lyrics: "Ooh, shock me like electric eel / baby girl turn me on with your electric feel". Later tracks such as the country-inflected "Pieces of What", the acid-drenched "Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters", and the progressive sounding "The Handshake", should not be overlooked, and offer another side to a band with many fresh methods to their madness.
